Adequate food intake in older adults is vital for maintaining health and preventing malnutrition. This webinar examines strategies to improve dietary intake in this population. Key approaches include providing high-energy, protein-fortified meals and snacks; improving the visual appeal and presentation of foods; enhancing flavour; and offering finger foods or texture-modified options to support eating. Familiar, fortified foods may improve acceptance and intake, while attractive presentation and varied flavours can increase enjoyment and encourage consumption. Flavour enhancement may also help counter age-related declines in taste and smell, sustaining interest in food and supporting adequate intake. For individuals with chewing or swallowing difficulties, appropriately tailored texture-modified diets are essential for safe and effective nutrition. Evidence suggests that improvements in food presentation can enhance palatability and appeal, potentially increasing consumption. Overall, addressing sensory preferences and physical challenges associated with eating is crucial to supporting adequate nutrition and wellbeing in older adults. This review highlights the value of multifaceted, personalised dietary strategies that reflect individual needs and preferences to optimise food intake and nutritional status.
