Nutrition, particularly carbohydrate availability, plays a crucial role in achieving optimal performance during endurance exercise. Recently, it has been suggested that consuming higher than recommended amounts of carbohydrates during exercise could further improve performance and recovery. However, ensuring high carbohydrate availability at all times may result in an energy surplus, meaning athletes must decide whether to prioritise carbohydrate intake before or during exercise to maintain energy balance. This webinar will provide a summary of the evidence regarding the importance of carbohydrates before and during exercise, followed by a discussion on their respective roles. Additionally, a new framework for daily carbohydrate availability will be proposed, along with recommendations for carbohydrate intake before and during exercise, tailored to the specific demands of different training sessions.

Dr. Tim Podlogar is a Lecturer in Applied Physiology at the University of Exeter. He completed his PhD (2020) in carbohydrate metabolism before and during exercise at the University of Birmingham. Subsequently, he pursued a postdoctoral fellowship in environmental physiology and metabolism in Slovenia before returning to the University of Birmingham in 2021 for a three-year postdoctoral fellowship to investigate carbohydrate metabolism during exercise with and without heat acclimation. In late 2024, he was appointed as a Lecturer in Applied Physiology at the University of Exeter, where he continues his research in the field of exercise metabolism. In his leisure time, Tim has been engaged in the role of a nutritionist for numerous professional and amateur athletes.
