During this webinar, Emeritus Professor Michael Gleeson, Loughborough University, author of the evidence-based healthy lifestyle guidebook Eat, Move, Sleep, Repeat, will discuss the benefits of losing excess body fat in order to improve health and fitness and reduce the risk of common chronic diseases. He will first describe the links between overeating, having too much adipose tissue, chronic low-grade inflammation and the development of chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. Using evidence from scientific studies he will debunk some of the common myths of dieting, explore which diets work for weight loss and which don’t (or are unhealthy), discuss what is the best type of exercise for fat burning (definitely not high-intensity interval training as claimed in several recent healthy lifestyle books authored by non-scientists) and why a combination of non-extreme dieting and increased physical activity is likely the best option for safe, effective and long-lasting weight loss. He will also describe a personalised weight loss plan incorporating multiple diets and non-exhausting exercise that most people can do.

Michael Gleeson is Emeritus Professor of Exercise Biochemistry at Loughborough University. He retired in 2016 after 40 years of research and teaching mostly related to the diet, metabolism, health and performance of athletes. He had a particular interest in the effects of diet and exercise on the function of the immune system and is a Past-President of the International Society of Exercise and Immunology (ISEI).
He has co-authored several books on exercise biochemistry, sport nutrition and exercise immunology and published over 200 research papers in scientific and medical journals. He is still an active science writer and in the past few years has contributed to international expert consensus reviews sponsored by the IOC (training load and illness risk), ISEI (immuno-nutrition) and UEFA (nutrition in elite football) as well as completing the 3rd edition of his highly popular book Sport Nutrition co-authored with Professor Asker Jeukendrup.
In 2020 he is releasing his first solo books: Eat, Move, Sleep, Repeat (January), Beating Type 2 Diabetes (April) and The Pick’n’Mix Weight Loss Plan (December). These are a series of healthy lifestyle guidebooks that have been written for the benefit of public health.
